General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic
Web traffic for the top 100 websites witnessed a significant jump in March, with most websites seeing at least some minor growth. Overall, top 100 traffic increased by an impressive 7%.
Looking specifically at the top 10, nearly all experienced month-over-month (MoM) increases — and this was especially true for tech. Google.com, for instance, saw a steady traffic increase of 3%. Further down the list, microsoft.com (1%), spotify.com (1%), and bing.com (9%) all saw positive gains.
E-commerce giants like amazon.com (2%) and walmart.com (2.5%) both enjoyed modest traffic upticks. And the commerce luck mostly continued across the board. In fact, etsy.com, ebay.com, and paypal.com all experienced upticks somewhere between 3 and 6%.
Other sites, like lowes.com and homedepot.com, capitalized on the spring weather, realizing traffic upswings this month of 11% and 15%, respectively.
On the social media front, twitter.com fell -3%, despite its peers seeing growth. In fact, tiktok.com (4%), whatsapp.com (7%), reddit.com (4%), and facebook.com (4%) all showed upward trends, highlighting some inconsistency in the category for March.
On the news side, things were even more tricky. Domains such as espn.com and nytimes.com saw impressive MoM gains of 18% and 5%, respectively. However, foxnews.com experienced a -7% slip, and breitbart.com fared similarly at -11.5%.
The streaming category came in strong across the board, however, with traffic to netflix.com (7%), hulu.com (4%), and spotify.com (1%) all on the incline.
We suspect spring break played a part in the upswing this month, as well as the warmer weather for travel and home improvement websites.
It’s Not Just About the Traffic
Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:
- Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
- Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.
Insights on the Most Popular Sites in the US by Industry
To spot more granular market patterns and provide more useful insights, we decided to show the leading U.S. websites in terms of traffic volume by different industries: Education, Fashion, Travel, Retail, Teamwork, Social Networks, Media, Food Delivery, and Streaming Services.
Education
The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category
The education sector saw severe turbulence in March, with many of our top sites observing serious declines. The blow was mostly softened, however, by studentaid.gov. And overall, the sector’s traffic declined by -1%.
Aside from studentaid.gov’s 72% uptick, traffic throughout the sector fell across the board. Our biggest losers this month were instructure.com, chegg.com, blackboard.com, and quizlet.com, who all saw declines of over 10%.
Although slightly less worrying, traffic to calculator.net (-9%), pearson.com (-8%), clever.com (-7%), and schoology.com (-6%) still steadily declined. Second place (in a weird race) goes to goodreads.com, who experienced a traffic decline of only -5%.
Although turbulence in the sector is expected during spring break, we’re interested in seeing how these sites will end the current school year. Expect a significant traffic resurgence in both April and May, followed by steady declines as we head into the summer.
